IE compatibility

A web comic showing two men: one is wearing a green jacket and the other is wearing a red cap. The man in green jacket says: ‘I make layouts for Internet Explorer 6’. The man in red cap asks: ‘How is that?’. The man in the green jacket becomes all crooked, with his arms in weird poses, a leg sticking out to the side, tongue out and googly eyes looking in opposite directions. The red cap man looks surprised and concerned.

Yes, I know I’m crazy.

But keeping this website true to its theme I felt like it’s my moral responsibility to make it work in the original browser that comes with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.

So yes, it’s true, this website is now compatible with IE6, IE7, and IE8, preserving its functionality and most of its looks even in these ancient browsers.

It’s easy to take for granted that nowadays you can just build a website using one of many popular CSS frameworks, code the logic in React or even in your favorite programming language and compile it for WASM and it will look and work the same in any modern browser. Making your website work with something as ancient and as cranky as Internet Explorer 6, especially the JavaScript part, is a very humbling experience. Especially when you don’t have the very basic and essential tools like getElementsByClassName or even Promises. Or just full on bugs, when for example an image is not getting displayed if it’s close to a clear: both block.

To make it compatible, this website doesn’t use any frameworks on purpose, it’s very minimalistic and bare-bones when it comes to the code.

It’s still not perfect, some stuff is missing and it doesn’t look the same as in modern browsers, but I’ll keep working on it in the future. I’m confident I can make it identical, it’s going to be my small personal challenge.
